What Is an Online QR Code Scanner?

An online QR code scanner reads the information stored inside a QR code without requiring a separate scanning app. With this tool, you can upload an image or screenshot containing a QR code, drag an image into the scanner, or use a compatible device camera.

After the code is detected, the scanner displays its decoded content. Depending on the QR code, you may be able to open a website, copy text, view WiFi details, download a contact, save a calendar event, compose an email, call a phone number, start a text message or open geographic coordinates in a map.

The scanner is designed for QR codes. It does not claim support for traditional one-dimensional barcode formats such as UPC, EAN or Code 128.

How to Use the Online QR Code Scanner

Scan a QR Code From an Image

1. Select Upload Image.
2. Choose an image or screenshot containing the QR code. You can also drag and drop the image into the upload area.
3. Wait for the scanner to detect and decode the QR pattern.
4. Review the displayed result before opening a link or choosing another action.

Uploading an image is useful when the QR code appears in a screenshot, downloaded document, digital ticket, email or photo already stored on your device. Common browser-readable image formats such as PNG, JPG and WebP should work when they contain a clear QR pattern.

Scan With a Camera

1. Select Use Camera.
2. Choose Start Camera and grant camera permission when prompted.
3. Place the complete QR code inside the camera view.
4. Hold the device steady until the result appears.
5. Review the decoded information before selecting an action.

Camera scanning requires a device with a working camera, a compatible browser and permission to access that camera. If camera access is unavailable, capture a screenshot or photo and use the image-upload option instead.

What Types of QR Codes Can It Read?

The online QR code scanner examines the decoded text for several commonly used QR data formats. The available result actions depend on the format it recognizes.

• Website URL: Preview the decoded HTTP or HTTPS address, open it in a browser or copy the text.
• WiFi network: View recognized network details and copy the password or complete decoded text.
• Contact card: Preview recognized vCard details, copy the content or download the contact as a VCF file.
• Calendar event: Preview recognized event information, copy it or download an ICS calendar file.
• Email: Open a recognized mailto link in a compatible email application or copy its content.
• Phone number: Open a recognized telephone link on a compatible device or copy the number.
• SMS message: Open a recognized SMS link in a compatible messaging application or copy its content.
• Geographic coordinates: Open recognized coordinates in Google Maps or copy the decoded text.
• Plain text: Read and copy text that does not match another supported format.

Format recognition depends on how the QR content is structured. Content that does not use a recognized prefix or data structure will normally be displayed as plain text.

Scan a QR Code From a Screenshot

If a QR code is displayed on the same phone or computer you are using, you do not need to point its camera at another screen. Take a screenshot, crop it only enough to remove unrelated content and upload the saved image to the QR scanner.

Keep the full QR pattern and the clear margin surrounding it. Cropping through the edges of the code can prevent detection. A sharp screenshot will usually be easier to decode than a blurry photo of a screen.

Direct clipboard-image pasting is not currently available. Save the screenshot as an image, drag the file into the upload area or select it through the file picker.

Why Is My QR Code Not Scanning?

A QR code reader needs to distinguish the complete square pattern from its background. If no result is found, check the image or camera view for the following problems:

• The QR code is too small in the image.
• The image is blurry, compressed or out of focus.
• Part of the code or its surrounding margin has been cropped.
• Glare, shadow or poor lighting hides part of the pattern.
• The code is viewed from a steep angle or appears distorted.
• The foreground and background have insufficient contrast.
• A logo, sticker, fold or damaged area covers too much of the code.
• Several QR codes appear in the same image or camera view.

Try moving the camera closer while keeping the entire QR code visible. For an uploaded image, use a higher-resolution copy and make sure the code is upright, sharp and surrounded by some clear space.

QR Code Privacy and Safety

The scanner logic processes the selected image or camera frame in your browser using JavaScript. Camera access begins only after you choose the camera option and grant the browser permission. You can revoke that permission through your browser or device settings.

Decoding a QR code only reveals its stored content. It does not verify that a website, phone number, WiFi network, contact or other action is trustworthy. A familiar logo or professionally printed code is not proof that its destination is safe.

Review a decoded web address before selecting Open Link. Check the full domain name, watch for misspellings and be cautious if the destination requests a password, payment information, an application download or other sensitive data. Opening a decoded link or action can contact an external website, application or service.
